Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Our first stop today was Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park near Montrose, Co. We drove huffing and puffing 9,000 ft. straight up to the top rim of the Canyon.  We talked after the fact that we should have left our campers at the bottom of the hill.  The Canyon was called the “black” canyon because it is so deep, sheer, and narrow that very little sunlight can penetrate it and it is a beautiful sight to see.  It did not have the spectacular colors that the Grand Canyon has but it was truly awesome on its own.

We drove 257 miles closer to home today.  We are in Canon City,
Co. for the night.  We also climbed Monarch Mountain today, which was 11,321 ft.  That was a challenge but we made it to the top with

  1. I know you are on your way as I read this. I should have thought of it sooner. If you come thorough Kansas on 50/400 you’ll see Dodge City ahd Greensburg. Greensburg was blown away a few years ago and has built back again. If you’ll turn south at Pratt and hit 160 at Medicine Lodge you’ll be getting close to “God’s country.” Medicine Lodge is the home of Martina McBride (or is it Harper?) Then as you continue on 160 you’ll bypass Mayfield where I was born and where I still have family, Wellington where I have more family, and finally Winfield where I was raised. From Winfield it is a pretty drive on to the Missouri border. Just a thought–I know you have your route
planned. I’ve followed you , salivating as I read your entries. Have a
good rest of the trip home. We’ll be eager to hear about it. Coralyn Bugg
