Leave Weld Enough Alone

Today was a unique day. We had extreme changes in scenery. We drove 300 miles from Williams Lake, with lake after lake until getting to Cache Creek in the Camelsfoot Mountain Range. The Milepost refers to this range as the Arizona of Canada, with very hot dry summers and dry winters. The only thing missing was the cactus.
We stopped at a scenic view and Danny decided to check his car’s water. When he took the radiator cap off, the neck came with it. An on the road repair from several years ago with J-B Weld finally failed. Another coat of J-B weld and we were on our way. Tech tip from Danny, when you get a new radiator before you install it go over all the welds with additional solder. They do not make them like Henry did.
The mountains today were the longest Michael said he had ever pulled before. The cars overheated but we had lots of water and got to our night’s destination OK. We were lucky to find a beautiful campsite by an river and expect to have a great night of sleeping.

From 50 degrees to 95

We left Prince Rupert and drove 256 miles to Houston, BC. It was a beautiful sunny day that turned out to be a 95 degree scorcher. I know you guys are saying “poor things” since I hear you have had some very hot and humid days. Going from a cool 50 degrees right into a hot 95 degrees is trying but the scenery is so great that we hardly cared. The manifold heaters were put into storage as well as our coats and gloves.

We are back in farm land and the farmers were bailing hay with the snow covered mountains in the back ground. We are now driving through the agriculture areas in Canada and the roads are much better to drive.

Goodbye to Haines

I have found the best way to discover a new town is to get to know the people that love it. We have made many new friends here in Haines. When returning from Scagway on the ferry we were met by Roger and Barb Maynard. They turned out to be good friends of a model A owner who had driven to Alaska in her Model A truck in 1953. We got to meet and talk with her at the local restaurant for breakfast. We really appreciate the hospitality shown to us by Roger and Barb Maynard, Gary and Juanita Lidholmn and Mary Manuell (the Model A owner). We also had such a great campground here in Haines and everyone there made our camping feel like home at the Hitch-Up RV Park.
Tomorrow we get on the ferry and head for Canada again. We hope to drive the coast of Washington, Oregon and California.

The Haines Highway

We haven’t blogged in a couple of days due to inclement weather and Canada’s unfriendly wi-fi. In order to reach Haines, Alaska we had to backtrack through Canada and spend the night at an old familiar site – Haines Junction, Canada. We had previously spent the night at Klaune Kampground and voted it the most scenic campsite on our trip. It felt good to be back in a place that was familiar and homey. Of course you can never truly get homesick pulling your home behind you. For you “of little faith” – yes we have spent every one of our 27 nights on the road in our home away from home! Coming back this direction required going over the same rough, muddy, graveled, washboard roads this time with steady rain. Our campsite on Sunday night was at Border City, Alaska and was voted the muddiest camp site to date. This camp ground was mostly geared toward Alaska Highway road construction workers so you can draw your own conclusions. We will include a photo to help you understand the scenario.
Today is a different story – had we not had to come to Haines to catch a ferry we would have missed the most beautiful scenic drive of our entire trip! As Danny said, “words cannot describe this!” We will let the pictures do the talking!
We will be in Haines for five days where we hope to spend a day fishing for salmon, taking a fast ferry over to Skagway, going to an eagle educational center to watch eagles in their habitat, bear and whale watching.

Glacier

It was still raining when we got up this morning, so we decided to stop at MacDonald’s for breakfast. We started thinking that we should make reservation for our ferry ride home. We found out that it was getting booked up in a hurry and the only thing we could get was a July 4th booking. That should be one good 4th of July party. We will leave Haines on the fourth and arrive in Prince Rupert on the 5th.
We had a very raining day of driving and the mountains were foggy and beautiful. We saw our first glacier today, and what a sight it was. It covered two or three miles as it rolled out of the mountain canyon. We pulled off to eat and get gas and the mountain behind our cars was so large and looming over them, and partly hid by heavy clouds.
Tonight we are in a very secluded campground with a creek running behind us. We have seen signs of beavers chewing on and actually taking down trees right beside our camp. If they do this tonight we hope they yell timber so we can get out of the way.

We also visited the Wasilla Museum of Transportation today and the guys really enjoyed looking through the rooms and fields of cars, trucks, trains, and planes! Tomorrow we will go to Anchorage and then onto Homer or Seward.

Moose

Moose sighting!
Moose sighting!

Driving to Fairbanks Sunday morning I saw my first moose. I have been watching every since we entered into Alaska. Everyone spots wild life before me. I have a milepost across my lap, radio in my hand, pen in the other hand and my eyes on the milepost looking for the next gas station. Gas stations are scarce and we have to keep our tanks full. Now back to seeing my first moose, Michael spots it first and by the time I pick up my radio to tell Tammy “moose to the right” we had already gone by and I missed it. Michael makes a U-turn in the middle of the Alaska Highway so I can get a look. He was huge, our first big bull. I am a happy camper.
